Welcome Back Podcast

As regular listeners of the Electric Runway podcast may have noticed, we took a break from recording for the past two months to produce InStore, our immersive event on the future of retail. InStore took place on May 2ND at the Design Exchange, Canada’s design museum. Put on in partnership with augmented reality company ModiFace and the City of Toronto’s Digital Main Street initiative, InStore looked at how three emerging technologies—namely, augmented reality, virtual reality and artificial intelligence— are impacting the future of how we buy and sell.

Despite being busy planning this first-of-its-kind event in the 6ix, we didn’t stop covering the fashion tech beat! In this episode of the Electric Runway podcast, fashion tech journalist Amanda Cosco goes over her adventures the past few months at Dx3, Canada’s leading digital marketing and retail conference, as well as emceeing MakeFashion, Calgary’s high-tech, high-fashion runway show.

We’ve also been thinking a lot about the relationship between clothing and content. In an upcoming episode of the podcast, we speak with Avery Dennison‘s Director of Digital Solutions to talk about Born Digital, the company’s initiative to “switch on” the fashion industry. Their mission is to digitize ten billion items of apparel and footwear by connecting them to the internet (this phenomenon of “plugging in” everyday objects is often referred to as the Internet of Things).

To achieve this ambitious goal, Avery Denninson is collaborating with EVRYTHNG, the smart-products platform, and designers like NYC-label Rochambeau, to reimagine how clothing can interface with our smartphones and provide more connected, intimate, and surprising experiences. It’s a pretty cool vision for the future of fashion, and I can’t wait to share it with you. Here’s a teaser from their YouTube channel:

Oh, and speaking of YouTube videos! Check out our sizzle reel from Women & Wearables, the event we co-organized in partnership with We Are Wearables Toronto at the MaRS Discovery District in Toronto.

It has been a busy few weeks, for sure!

Here’s where we’re headed next:
